Why is my internet so slow?

It may seem hard to believe that 96% of adults use the internet, but the days of logging off the web are long gone. We work, stream, and connect with friends and family online. We also use it to ask questions like, “why is my internet so slow?” That’s why if your home internet is slow, you and everyone in your house will be frustrated from the moment you read the news while brushing your teeth to when you watch your favorite show before bed.

Keep reading to see how to delete slow internet frustration.

WiFi Speed vs. Connection - Why is my Internet So Slow?

Before digging into how to make internet faster, it’s important to make a distinction between

slow internet and poor connectivity.

Slow internet is the result of your internet service provider (ISP) either delivering a low amount of bandwidth or an issue with their service.

Poor connectivity is the result of your devices losing connection to your router. We’ll dive into why that happens below in 3 easy steps.

Step 1 - Take an Internet Speed Test

One of the easiest ways to speed up your home internet is to take an internet speed test to make sure your ISP is delivering the speeds you’re paying for. If you’re not getting the speed your ISP is supposed to be delivering, then you may not have enough bandwidth to support all your devices.

If that’s the case, contact your ISP to diagnose why your speeds are lower than expected.

Step 2 - Set Up Your Router for Optimal Connectivity

Now on to how to improve poor connectivity.

WiFi is like music to our internet-connected devices. Moving them away from a router is like stepping away from a speaker. Add in barriers like walls and furniture and your devices could easily lose connection to your router.

Fortunately, simple fixes can improve your home internet connection.

Is your router on a shelf and surrounded by books? What about on the floor? Routers send out the best connection when they’re elevated and do not have items near them. If you’re having connectivity issues and your ISP is delivering proper speeds then reconsider your router’s location for better connection.

Step 3 - Upgrade Your Home Networking

The more devices you add to your home network, the more bandwidth you’ll need to share via home networking. You also may need more devices, like mesh WiFi pods, to share that bandwidth. This is especially true if you have multiple people in your household doing things like streaming in 4k or have several smart devices that are constantly using internet.
